Comparing CWI and VT Level II Certifications

The distinctions between these two certifications go beyond the work performed. Many codes and standards require us to monitor the quality of weldments. This monitoring can come in several forms, including observing and inspecting the entire welding process from start to finish, weld inspection, nondestructive examination(NDE), and material testing through destructive means. To perform these tasks, personnel are often required to be certified by specified means, and often more than one process of certification is acceptable. This article examines two certifications: the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Nondestructive Testing(NDT) Visual Testing (VT) Level II, and the American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). These certifications share some common areas, but they require different qualifications and responsibilities.
