Anew massive biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant is an important step towards 100% renewable district heating in Stockholm, Sweden. The new plant, inaugurated in May and expected to commence commercial operation this autumn, has a heat production capacity equivalent to 190,000 households and also produces electricity equivalent to 20,000 rooftops covered with solar panels. This makes the ?500 million plant the world's largest of its kind in a residential area. The new plant uses forest residues and wood waste as feedstock, pushing the share of renewable or recovered energy in the Stockholm district heating system to 90%.
