Whether opening a McDonald's franchise, starting a consulting firm or building a heifer development business, establishing realistic objectives is all-important. Starting a new business isn't easy. Starting a new business from the concept stage is harder. Worse, selling a new concept to potential backers makes climbing Mount Everest look like a cake walk. When Patsy Houghton, Cal Siegfried and Stuart Seidner developed the plan for Heartland Cattle Company (HCC), there were times they felt they were trying to move Mount Everest, let alone climb it. Now, they've reached the peak of the summit and are looking for other mountains to climb. They found a market niche that expanded before they even got started. And, it's expanded twice since.
