Is the industry changing its "do-nothing" attitude toward carcass merit as the emphasis switches from commodity to consumer targets? "Yes," says John Crouch, director of performance programs for the American Angus Association (AAA) since 1981, and perhaps the top authority on carcass EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences). Over a 38-year span, AAA has amassed growth data on 120,000 bulls and 1.2 million cows. Yet by 1986, only a few bulls in the Angus breed had carcass EPDs. Why? Nobody cared, Crouch says. Crouch recently sat down with BEEF magazine to discuss the philosophical evolution going on in the beef industry today.
