The cattle market moved both up and down during August. Some price strength came early in the month but prices drifted lower into the middle of the final week. Choice fed steers in the Amarillo area began September in the 60-61 dollar/cwt range. Feeder steer prices also moved lower but recovered earlier and ended August with mild strength. Statistical averages, however, provide a slightly different picture. When examined on a monthly average basis, Choice fed steers were almost the same in August asa month earlier. In contrast, 600- to 700-lb. MF #1 feeder steers averaged about 2.50 dollar less.
