Tots urged to eat fresh with Del Monte snack bags: A small bag of fresh-cut fruit and vegetables could soon prove the antidote to the bags of sugary treats usually consumed during the UK school day

WITH kids in the UK supposedly piling on the pounds, the time has never been better to launch initiatives aimed at tackling childhood obesity and boosting the 5-a-Day message. Del Monte UK has therefore launched a range of 50g fruit and vegetable snack bags in primary schools for youngsters aged between five and 11, currently available in apple, carrot and grape and designed to provide a healthy alternative to crisps and sweets. "We did a lot of work in the foodservice sector during 2006, with education a particularly high priority," explains Peter Miller, managing director of Del Monte UK. The company already runs a Smoothie fi Scratch project in UK schools, whereby school canteens buy Del Monte juices and fruits and create their own smoothies to distribute at lunchtime, and also supplies bananas to schools as part of the Ut government's free fruit for schools scheme.
