In the year since I adopted my Appaloosa rescue filly Sophie, she had busted two fences, ripped open her belly, lashed out at nearly everyone except me and been deemed by a respected trainer as too dangerous to start under saddle. Still, I loved Sophie. And we had forged a tight bond as I nursed her back to health - twice. We were softer than our usual bristly selves with each other. My heart always warmed when I saw her, and no matter where she was in the pasture or paddock, when I showed up she'd make a beeline for me, ears pricked, a good-natured look in her eyes.
