Adult midges of 11 species of the subfamily Tanypodinae (Chironomidae) from the Kuril Islands have been studied, with one species recorded for the first time from the Palaearctic Region, and 4 species, from Russia. Chironomids of the subfamily Tanypodinae have wide distribution ranges and inhabit diverse climatic zones of different zoogeographic regions. Imagines of 165 species of the family Tanypodinae have been collected in the Palaearctic and 146 species, in the Nearc-tic Region (Oliver et al., 1990; Saether et al., 2000). The fauna of this subfamily in North America, Japan, and Europe has been studied in sufficient detail (Ro-back, 1971; Oliver et al., 1990; Sasa, 1998; Saether et al., 2000). The data on the species composition of the subfamilyTanypodinae in Russia based on collected imagines are scanty. According to the published data, which are mainly based on examination of larvae, pupae, and, more rarely, imagines, 60 species of this subfamily occur in Russia (Shilova, 1976; Pankratova, 1977). These figures are not reliable, because faunal studies have been for the most part carried out in European Russia.
