Telescopic handlers

These popular machines are no longer just for lift-and-place work. Manufacturers are designing them to run a variety of attachments. When renting or buying a telescopic handler, one of the first things to consider is whether you want the machine just to load and place material or need it to do dirt work as well, running attachments such as buckets, augers and brooms. While telescopic handlers in North America have traditionally been used solely for lift-and-place tasks, during the past several years manufacturers have been designing some of their machines to perform a variety of jobsite duties. But when telescopic handlers were initially put into digging applications, manufacturers found they didn't last long before components started failing, says John Koepf, telescopic handler product manager for Gehl. They looked to technology used in the European market - where telescopic handlers are commonly used for a variety of applications - and adopted design changes such as low boom mounts, strengthened boom and boom hinge and modified axles.
