Steel mill flooring-An eight-year case study at mittal IH7 Blast Furnace

Many different methods of steel mill flooring have been used over the years. This article looks at one of the very first thermal floor tile applications at the Mittal No. 7 blast furnace floor. The Mittal Steel Indiana Harbor No. 7 blast furnace (Figure 1) is the largest blast furnace in the United States. The flooring system has been in service since September 1997. Mittal has not replaced any blast furnace floor tiles since they were first installed in 1997. This paper contains a simple, straightforward economic analysis of the project.
