Products Liability Law and Its Implications for Engineering Practice

Engineers unintentionally design legal liability or risks into every product. Those risks are less likely to occur if engineers understand the legal claims typically found in products liability lawsuits and change design practices accordingly. Simply stated, a product feature that is "not defective" from an engineering point-of-view might be defective from a legal one. Engineers, therefore, must consider legal definitions of product defect in the design process, choose their words carefully when dealing with customers, and work to ensure sales and marketing representations are grounded in product design capabilities.
