Iraqi Kurdistan: From Investment Hotspot to Investment Pariah

Whatever optimism that began welling up among producers in Iraq's semiautonomous Kurdish region last year following the seeming removal of a long-standing export strait jacket imposed by Baghdad has quickly drained, and many are left wondering if it will ever return (EIF Dec.24' 14). War with the radical Islamic State group, a growing realization the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) geology is far more challenging than some early discoveries indicated, and highly combustible aboveground community relations are among those factors that have deflated that optimism. But above all sit persistent nonpayment issues, brought on by continued tensions with Baghdad (EIF Feb. 11' 15).
