Having talked about the unpredictable weather in my last Bulletin column, I wasn't expecting the point to be brought home quite so strongly at this year's Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes. Those witnessing a course on the verge of drought in May were amazed by the lushness of the rough and the waterlogged bunkers come the third week of July. It could not have been a more difficult period of preparation for Paul Smith and his greenkeeping team and their valiant efforts in presenting a course fit for the world's best golfers, and in keeping the course accessible for 180,000 spectators, were rightly praised by Jim McArthur, Chairman of the R&A Championship Committee, at the presentation ceremony. And what a thrilling finish to the week... it is difficult to put it all into words so the following provides a visual record of the 141st Open Championship.
