The term 'algae' translates as 'seaweed' in Latin and describes a large group of organisms that can be found in saltwater, freshwater, soils and in a wide variety of other habitats. Algae exist as single celled or multicellular organisms that vary insize from microscopic to macroscopic - marine seaweeds are actually complex forms of macroscopic algae and some can grow to 50m in length. Most algae are able to trap the sun's energy by photosynthesis.
