CHINESE INDIUM PRODUCERS CLASH OVER QUOTA SYSTEM

Indium producers in China have clashed with each other over plans being mulled by the Chinese government to introduce export quotas. At a meeting organised by government officials in Beijing in early February to hear the views of indium producers, larger companies proposed quotas that could put some of their smaller rivals out of business, representatives at the meeting told MB. "The quota system will affect many businesses and cause many companies to close down. It is not the right thing to do," said a senior official from a private indium producer in central China's Hunan province who attended the meeting. Among the prerequisites proposed by major smelters include requiring companies to have produced and exported at least 20 tpy of indium between 2003 and 2006 and registered capital of 100 million yuan (12.9 million dollars), sources said.
