Opening the 20th installment of the Met Coke World Summit, John Quanci, SunCoke Energy's vice president of engineering and technology and its chief technology officer, looked at the agenda for the conference ahead and declared, in so many words: what's new is actually old. Twenty years ago, he explained, the attendees of that first gathering, held in 1997, were talking about some of the very same things as this time around. What's the role of pulverized coal injection in a world of low-cost gas? With coke supplies tightening up, is a shortage in the offing? What's the technology that will help meet environmental regulations? It just goes to show, he said, that "It's a very, very cyclic industry."
