Today, that comparison might just as readily be applied to the lighting industry; few other technologies have advanced quite so dramatically in recent years. Sticking with the automotive analogy - if vehicle efficiency had improved in line with lighting units, we would all be getting 200 miles to the gallon from cars that guarantee decades of trouble-free motoring.
