When considering stone used within the construction of buildings it is acknowledged that the architect, engineer, surveyor or conservator usually selects it; or in the case of historic buildings, it was possibly chosen by the master mason. When it fails its problems are primarily studied by the academic. Rarely if ever, does the academic specify what stone, -should be used and in what location it would be best suited. This role might be undertaken by the conservator who would provide appropriate treatments through practical solutions, and then normally to the existing stonework. If you are looking for the solution to a specific problem this is not necessarily the most appropriate text. This is a serious academic work stemming directly from the Belfast SWAPNET weathering 2000 conference papers, which were based upon very specific topics ranging across the areas of rock weathering, stone decay and conservation. It is hoped, however, that this work might provide the reader with a number of views relating to the nature of weathering and decay process, and the factors controlling them; hopefully, enabling the conservator/surveyor to identify and consider appropriate conservation programmes and policies.
