FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE

The annual Conference took place in Edinburgh and, with a whole week ahead of us, Barbara and I decided to drive up, breaking the journey in Cumbria. We thought a couple of days in such a beautiful part of the country would help recharge the batteries. Our journey took us up the Ml, AIM and into North Yorkshire and Leyburn for lunch; we had called here a few months ago and had bookmarked it 'to call again'. Legs stretched and caffeine levels recharged, we continued our journey to Shap in Cumbria which is where' we had decided to stay for a couple of nights. Now Shap itself is, to say the least, isolated, but the area is beautiful. On a couple of occasions we found ourselves on unmarked roads, travelling across fields with several astonished farmers watching us. We then realised that it was the weekend of the free-to-roam bill; they probably thought we were staking our claim, but it was more the fact that the map reader was a little adventurous! We also climbed to the highest market town in England - Alton. Now there's something to try; full of hairpin bends and stunning drops, I think it tops Snake Pass.
