The major project embraces seven existing Norwich Union buildings; including the Grade 1 listed Surrey House, all close to the Castle Mall in the centre of Norwich. The buildings are collectively being taken through a major programme of redevelopment, with four buildings being completely refurbished. Staff are continuing to work in the buildings during the phased redevelopment which, on completion, will have created 400,000 square feet of office space. The most visual aspect of this enormous project is a spectacular new atrium created by the insertion of a doubly curved wide span steel and glass roof over a courtyard created by four separate buildings - Surrey House, Sienna, Carrara and Antico. Surrey House is a Grade 1 listed building;; the others have been built on the site at different periods and were assessed to not have the spare structural capacity needed to support a roof of this nature. Thus the site dictated the decision to make the roof covering to enclose the courtyard as structurally independent as possible. The newer buildings wrap around Surrey House, enclosing a space where a podium gives access to Sienna, with a staff restaurant in the covered space on top. The site is a highly concentrated space with numerous existing underground structures and many logisticalobstacles.
