Mesothermic species and varieties suitable for turf in the centre south of Cordoba province, Argentina

The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality and persistence of different species and varieties of perennial cool season grasses suitable for turfgrass in the centre south of Cordoba province, Argentina. The establishment, density and soil coverof three varieties of Lolium perenne, four of Festuca arundinacea and two of Poa trivialis were assessed. Results show that Lolium perenne and Festuca arundinacea had a better performance and persistence than Poa trivialis. The Festuca arundinacea varieties Aztec. Bonsai and Taurus sustained an adequate and better soil coverage during the summer seasons than Lolium perenne varieties Manhattan and Affinitty, although the soil cover they produced was iess dense. Cypress and another unidentified variety of Poa trivialis were suitable for turf until the arrival of the first summer season only, indicating that these varieties are appropriate for overseeding on warm season species.
