In 1977 Dr. George Engel challenged medical educators to abandon their dependence on a reductionistic, biomedical model and to embrace a biopsychosocial method of care [1]. Proponents of a biopsychosocial model have since provided ample evidence that the model is an essential, clinical guide to medical practice [2]. The failure of a biomedical model to understand patients in context and appreciate the impact of psychosocial factors has resulted in patient dissatisfaction, clinician frustration, and a dramatic increase in chronic health conditions.
