Western Australia is overhauling its approvals process for energy and mining projects in a bid to avoid a repeat of the loss of Japanese Inpex's US$20 billion-plus Ichthys LNG venture to neighboring Northern Territory. The streamlining involves introducing a "one-stop shop" system where a lead agency is appointed for each project to help it through the approvals process at the relevant authorities, Premier Colin Barnett said Friday. The Department of State Development will be responsible for major resources projects such as Chevron's A$43 billion (US$39 billion) Gorgon LNG venture and the Department of Mines and Petroleum for the emerging uranium sector. The state will also introduce online monitoring of all approvals.
