Why IMO is issuing fuel system guidelines

Engine rooms remain the major fire hazard onboard and fuel oil systems remain the main culprit, despite widespread concern and many column inches over many years on the subject. IMO noted recently that there had been a continuing incidence of machinery space fires due to leakage of fuel oil. Investigations of fire casualties and analysis of casualty statistics and technical research had revealed that leakages from the fuel systems were due to the failure of worn, incorrectly fitted, slack, over-tightened or unsuitable components.
