In 1988 the die was cast in the United States when the then Chief of Naval Staff declared that IED (Integrated Electric Drive), as it was then called, would meet the propulsion and all other onboard electrical power requirements of the future Battle Force combatant. This successor to the ' Arleigh Burke's' was to become designated SC21 (Surface Combatant, 21st century).
