摘要

The preliminary stage of a multi-stage project has been earned out aimed at providing general guidance on welding repairs in terms of when such repairs may or may not be beneficial. The work has been centred on detailed finite element modelling of a matrix of relevant unrepaired and repaired weld configurations. Development and validation of the finite element models have been undertaken by way of an experimental programme involving mechanical testing using photoelastic coating and thermal emission methods. A number of material characterisation tests have been performed and residual stress profiles have been evaluated experimentally. These profiles have been well replicated in the finite element models. This paper details, the work carried out to date on the project and highlights the preliminary conclusions that have resulted from it.
