Flawed exposure analysis and conflicts of interest.

To the Editor-In 2003, our data was published on observed increased risks for cancer in successive cohorts of naval divers with multiple exposures to carcinogens in the Kishon River-Israel's most polluted water network. As early as the 1960s, fishermen reported declines in fishing yields within the estuary, and dead fish were common observations. Since the 1960s, repeated water quality reports showed increasingly severe pollution of the Kishon water system from industrial effluents, agricultural run-off and municipal waste. There were catastrophic falls in fish yield, and studies showed genotoxic and other pathologic changes in fish tissue. A study by a governmental commission of inquiry showed lesser but non-trivial increased risks for cancer in later cohorts.
