Successful treatment of major oral aphthous ulcers in HIV-1 infection after highly active antiretroviral therapy.

Oral recurrent aphthous ulcers are a well-recognized complication in HIV-1-infected patients. Multiple pathogenic mechanisms for this disorder have been proposed, but the exact cause remains unknown. Seventy of lesions usually correlates with the stage of immunosuppression and response to available treatments is often unsatisfactory. We describe herein a patient with multiple oral major aphthous ulcers who failed to respond to conventional treatments, and only improved after initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
