Magnetic Properties and Molecular Quadrupole Tensor of the Water Molecule by Beamhyphen;Maser Zeeman Spectroscopy

The hyperfine and Zeeman components of the 3ndash;2ndash;22and 43ndash;51transitions of D2O, the 22minus;21transition of HDO, and the 6minus;5minus;5minus;1transition of H2O have been measured with a beamhyphen;maser Zeeman spectrometer. This allowed determination of the elements of the magnetic moment tensorGggand of the anisotropic part of the magnetic susceptibility tensorlpar;khgr;ggndash;khgr;Avrpar;for D2O. The best fit results are (forkhgr;ggndash;khgr;Avin 10minus;8kHZ Gminus;2):Gaathinsp;equals;thinsp;0.32530lpar;10rpar;, Gbbthinsp;equals;thinsp;0.36009lpar;22rpar;, Gccthinsp;equals;thinsp;0.32513lpar;15rpar;, khgr;aandash;khgr;Avthinsp;equals;thinsp;3.88lpar;20rpar;, khgr;bbndash;khgr;Avthinsp;equals;thinsp;minus;thinsp;1.66lpar;40rpar;, khgr;ccndash;khgr;Avthinsp;equals;thinsp;minus;thinsp;2.23lpar;30rpar;. From these values the elements of the molecular quadrupole moment tensor for D2O have been determined (in 10minus;26esumiddot;cm):thgr;aathinsp;equals;thinsp;2.72lpar;2rpar;, thgr;bbthinsp;equals;thinsp;minus;thinsp;0.32lpar;3rpar;, thgr;ccthinsp;equals;thinsp;minus;2.40lpar;2rpar;. The sign of the molecular electric dipole moment and the validity of the isotopic invariance of the electronic charge distribution have been investigated by comparing the molecular magnetic moments of D2O, HDO, and H2O. The obtained experimental values for several onehyphen;electron properties are in fair agreement with recent accurateab initiocalculations.
