By means of molecular dynamics, we have studied the time evolution of an isolated system composed of Lennardhyphen;Jones particles. The system was initially split into two regions, all the particles in the same region having the same speed. The dominant collisions leading to the overpopulation effects have been identified. It has also been shown that the more relevant features of the evolution of the system can be accurately described by means of a local equilibrium distribution function.
