Fragmentation of acetone following excitation in the region of the oxygenKedge

The fragmentation of acetone following excitation in the region of the oxygenKedge was studied by timehyphen;ofhyphen;flight mass spectroscopy. By comparing mass spectra obtained using various photon energies ranging from below to well above the threshold for oxygen 1sexcitation, it is found that methyl ion production is strongly associated with excitation of an oxygen 1selectron. None of the excitations generated significant yields of atomic oxygen or carbon ions.
