The fundamental frequency assignment of thionyl fluoride has been made from Raman spectra of the liquid at minus;100deg;C and the gas at 2.5 atm and the infrared spectrum of the gas. The sample used has a purity of greater than 99.9 mole . The fundamental frequency assignment with the following frequency values taken from the infrared spectrum is ngr;1(aprime;), 1329.9, 1339.3 cmminus;1(Fermi resonance doublet); ngr;2(aprime;), 808.2 cmminus;1; ngr;3(aprime;), 530.4 cmminus;1; ngr;4(aprime;), 377.8 cmminus;1; ngr;5(aprime;), 747.0 cmminus;1; ngr;6(aPrime;), 392.5 cmminus;1.The symmetric and asymmetric SF2bending modes, ngr;4and ngr;6, have been definitely identified in all the spectra and their symmetry characterized by polarization measurements from the Raman spectrum of the liquid.
