NMR spectra of sodium phosphide were obtained. The coupling constant for site 1 is 1.53thinsp;plusmn;thinsp;0.05 Mc/sec (lower limit) and 1.7 Mc/sec (upper limit); for site 2 it is 0.48thinsp;plusmn;thinsp;0.05 Mc/sec. These measured coupling constants are inconsistent with an ionic model but are consistent with both Suchet's model and theZ2thinsp;equals;thinsp;plus;thinsp;1model, implying a degree of covalent bonding. Asymmetry parameters are zero.
