The vapor pressures of ruthenium and osmium have been determined by the use of Langmuir vaporization and Knudsen effusion techniques. The vapor pressure of ruthenium over the temperature range 2000deg; to 2500deg;K is represented by the equationlogpmmequals;10.81ndash;33480sol;T, and the vapor pressure of osmium over the temperature range of from 2300deg; to 2800deg;K by the equationlogpmmequals;10.85ndash;40950sol;T. Thirdhyphen;law analyses of the data yield the following heats of vaporization: rutheniumDgr;Hcompfn;298equals;154.9plusmn;1.3kcal/mole; osmiumDgr;Hcompfn;298equals;187.4plusmn;0.9kcal/mole. Estimated boiling points for ruthenium and osmium are 4350deg;plusmn;100deg;K and 5300deg;plusmn;100deg;K, respectively.
