Electron transfer has been observed by ESR spectroscopy in xhyphen;irradiated single crystals of partially deuterated glycine hydrochloride. The crystals were irradiated at 4.2deg;K and the transfer occurs on warming to 77deg;K. It consists of the movement of electrons between carboxyl groups with the electrons exhibiting greater affinity for protonated carboxyl groups than for deuterated carboxyl groups. A slight perturbation of bgr;hyphen;proton hyperfine couplings in carboxyl anion radicals due to substitution of a deuteron for a proton on the carboxyl group was also observed. The shift in coupling, which amounts to a fraction of a megahertz, was measured by ENDOR spectroscopy.
