In the second part of our two-part review of April's Light+Building in Frankfurt, Jill Entwistle surveys the latest trends and reviews a clutch of the latest offerings - and no prizes for guessing that LEDs lead the way. If anyone had any doubts that LEDs had come of age, they were rapidly dispelled at this year's Light+Building. While they were ubiquitous two years ago, they were often gratuitously shoved into any old fitting, so that manufacturers could be seen to be keeping up. What was more in evidence this year was that, while the retrofit approach is still alive and kicking, many manufacturers are finally looking at the particular qualities of solid-state sources and designing appropriate fittings. Lighting designers, who are actually quite good at banging on to manufacturers about what they would like to see, were pleased that their lobbying was finally paying off. They're finally giving us what we've been asking for,' said BDP's director of lighting Mark Ridler. 'For me, it's all about the optics.'
