The widespread use of digital photography has made it easy to share rail photographs on the Internet. Many enthusiasts have their own photo websites or belong to groups where pictures are displayed and discussed. When browsing through pictures on websites a common fault is that many images have a 'grey' appearance and, in extreme cases, they can look more like a painting than a photograph. Why does this happen and how can it be avoided?Before describing the 'problem', the first thing to say is there is no single 'correct" approach to processing an image. A photographer is free to process pictures in any way they wish and creating a photo that looks like a painting is theirchoice and not necessarily a fault. If s also worth saying that some photographers in this situation may not realise what they have done, either because of a lack of knowledge or a badly set-up computer monitor.
