IT departments face serious challenges as they struggle to manage unwieldy data stores and chaotic storage environments. On top of that, storage infrastructures are increasingly distributed and complex―departments, workgroups and divisions seem to buy network-attached storage (NAS) by the truckload, and even mid-range companies are adopting storage area networks (SAN). Scott Hansbury, vice president of marketing and business development at CreekPath, said that storage customers' main headache was managing the complex environment of their storage networks. He defined the main factors in these demanding networks as heterogeneous environments, flat or declining IT budget and head-count, and the lack of industry-wide storage standards. This makes it extremely difficult for IT to meet service level requirements for their applications.
