The West Somerset Railway carried its second-highest number of passengers in its 32-year history in 2008, with 203,966 tickets sold -despite the economic downturn.Even though this figure is 10,000 less than the record set in 2007, the railway suffered perceptual problems caused by building work near Minehead station in the first half of the year, and then flange wear problems on the steam fleet which caused extensive substitution by diesels in June and July. However, the second half of the year finished strongly, with passenger numbers performing in line or slightly ahead of expectations.
