From measurements of the electrical conductances of solutions of alkalimdash;aromatic hydrocarbon salts in 2hyphen;methyltetrahydrofuran, tetrahydrofuran, and 1,2hyphen;dimethoxyethane, information has been gathered about the conditions under which the hydrocarbon negative ions are ``free'' or associated with the alkali counter ion. Guided by this knowledge, a study has been made of the influence of association on the electronic spectra of some negative ions in the polyacene and polyphenyl series.
