DB (Deutsche Bahn) and KeyRail, the infrastructure manager of the Dutch Betuweroute dedicated freight corridor, have begun testing one kilometre long freight trains between Oberhausen and Rotterdam. The project is known as GZ1000 and is being financed by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology with the aim of increasing capacity on heavily used freight routes. DB already operates freight trains up to 750 metres, although tests were carried out earlier this year using 835m trains between Hamburg and Ringsted in Denmark running via the Storebaelt link.
