Platinum(II) ions, incorporated into AgBr by meltndash;growth techniques, occupy substitutional positions in this material and directly trap photoproduced electrons. The reduced platinum center, (PtBr6)5minus;, which is thermally stable at or below 200thinsp;deg;K, has been studied by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. This center is tetragonally contracted, with the odd electron distributed between the metal Verbar;5dz2gsim;and Verbar;5sgsim; levels and bromide ligand quest;hyphen;antibonding orbitals. The photoproduction of the (PtBr6)5minus;center can be achieved with whitehyphen;light exposures, but it is most favorable at 510 and 650 nm.
