Over the past four years the field of marine organic geochemistry has expanded in many directions. In order to cover the major areas of this expansion in a review of the type presented here, several major topic areas have been selected focusing on the processes responsible for the transport and transformation of organic material. Some of these topics have been discussed in a previous review of future research problems in marine organic chemistry (Gagosian et al., 1978). They include: (1) the atmosphere over the oceans and the air/sea interface, (2) dissolved material in seawater, (3) particulate material as it is transported vertically through the water column, (4) Recent marine sediments, as well as (5) transformation reactions, (6) metal‐organic interactions including adsorption/desorption processes in the ocean, and (7) selected subjects in new areas of researc
