Absorption and emission spectra for the3B1hyphen;1A1transition in SO2gas are reported and subjected to a Franckhyphen;Condon type of analysis. It is shown that the transition moment varies rapidly with bond angle, and a modification of the usual Franckhyphen;Condon factors is necessary to deal with this case. The bond length and angle of the excited state are calculated to be 1.491 plusmn; 0.002 Aring; and 126.1 plusmn; 0.1deg;, respectively, in good agreement with values from rotational analysis. The oscillator strength of the absorption band is estimated to be (3.34 plusmn; 0.12) times; 10minus;7.
