The paper describes a response surface methodology (RSM) as an efficient approach to parametric model building and design optimization. Finite element analysis and RSM using mixed resolution central composite designs are utilized to determine the optimum torque performance of spindle motors. The effectiveness of the RSM is highlighted in the design of a four-factor three-level central composite rotatable design matrix for planing, conduction, execution and development of mathematical models. With the help of the analysis of variance and response surface plots, the optimal setting of design parameters is achieved for desired product quality.
