A set theoretic approach to the study of stochastic reaction models is presented. This approach is based on the premise that the possible compositions of a reaction system form a sohyphen;called ``composition space.'' From the concepts of set theory and a frequency interpretation of probability a probability function of the reaction composition is formulated. The sethyphen;theoretic approach is applied to the firsthyphen;order processes Ararr;B, Arlarr2;B, Ararr;Brarr;C and to the secondhyphen;order process 2Ararr;B. The results are compared with the stochastic Markov approach.
