Jessica Amanzo, of Peru, receivedfunds to travel to British Columbia forthe month of June and work with Dr.Michael Proctor on the Trans-BorderGrizzly Bear Project. Jessica has con-ducted field surveys of Andean bearsand participated in species conserva-tion planning in northern Peru sincethe early 2000's. Now she is poised to begin a telemetry study in the samearea, designed to investigate the im-pacts of mining on bears. Jessica hasreceived preliminary training in cap-ture and handling through workshops,but desired to gain hands-on experi-ence in safe and humane handlingtechniques in the field before startingher own field work in Peru. Jessica metDr. Proctor at the 2nd InternationalSymposium on the Andean Bear, inLima, Peru, last November. At thattime, Dr. Proctor extended the invita-tion for Jessica to come to his studysite for more training. Jessica's E&EGrant provides money for airfare fromPeru and in-country travel in Canada,while the Trans-Border Grizzly BearProject provides room and board andthe opportunity for Jessica to receivetraining in black and grizzly bearcapture and analysis of VHF and GPStelemetry data.
