American citizens' safety and security is the goal of the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS). How that is achieved is going to take a fundamental shift by a number of organizations, agencies, bureaus and offices that have not had a history of working together. What will make the difference in the success or failure of the new department will be the implementation of a vast array of technologies that will allow the 22 different organizations and 170,000 employees to share and disseminate information. For all the businesses clamoring to provide those technologies to the new department, it could mean a windfall of profits. For the department though, it's going to require evaluation of current systems, reallocation of resources, methodical implementation, training and time.
