Knowledge of the management of poisoning cases is important to every physician who provides health care to children. This review begins with a discussion of the demographics of pediatric poisoning and emphasizes the importance of regional poison control centers. Some unexpected sources of poisons are also identified, including latex paint and alternative medicines. It is also emphasized that fathers as well as mothers may intentionally poison their child and should not be overlooked as possible perpetrators of this form of child abuse. Regarding the treatment of corrosive esophageal burns, it has finally been established that the use of corticosteroids is not beneficial.
