Acute respiratory failure is primarily responsible for neonatal morbidity and mortality. This review focuses on many exciting advances that have occurred in the past year in the care and treatment of neonates with respiratory failure in intensive care nurseries. These advances include surfactant replacement therapy, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and liquid ventilation. The review also covers some recent observations concerning bronchopulmonary dysplasia or chronic lung disease, patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonary hypoplasia, and meconium aspiration syndrome.
